Sky high fun, excitement at Atlantic City Airshow
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- You couldn't ask for better weather for a big event down at the shore.
The 15th annual Thunder Over the Boardwalk Airshow has taken flight over the skies of Atlantic City.
It's the largest airshow on the East Coast and people are packing the boardwalk and the city's famous beach to snag those prime spots.
The Cabezas family is one of thousands who got up bright and early to mark their turf on the sand and surf.
They're visiting from New York and jumped on the chance to see the high flying spectacle.
Some former military members tell Action News they appreciate the support as they come to salute those using their trained skills to entertain the crowd of nearly 400,000 people.
"I am also a local VFW and want to support the troops. I have always wanted to see the show and never had opportunity and never had the time," said Jim Dunn from Chalfont, Pennsylvania.
Whether on the beach or the boardwalk, all eyes were on the skies. For the little ones, it was a pretty spectacular final farewell to summer.
"Seeing the air show is cool. It's not every day do you get to see giant helicopters flying and people parachuting everywhere," said 7-year-old Dylan Goldberg.
From Brigantine to Ventnor, the event is expected to bring in $26 million dollars, not bad for a Wednesday and especially for Atlantic City, which could use the financial boost.
"This is always good for Atlantic City and that's the kind of money that's reported and that's based on sales tax so it's cash coming in for us. This is a fun time to be here and a fabulous airshow and a great tribute to men and women in armed services," said Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian.
The big attraction was the Thunderbirds and the air demonstration squadrom of the United States Air Force, with many saluting them from their spot in the sand.
