READING, Pa. (WPVI) -- An unspecified "safety threat" forced the evacuation of Alvernia University's campus in southwest Reading for a few hours Tuesday.

University spokesperson Brad Drexler told WMFZ-TV that the university received the threat Tuesday morning, but declined to elaborate on the type of threat.

The university's public safety department proceeded to investigate and called in Reading police to assist.

At that point, Drexler said, officials made the decision to evacuate the campus.

The evacuation order lasted until approximately 2 p.m, when Alvernia's residents halls reopened and faculty and staff reported back to work.

Classes were set to resume within the hour.
