PHOTOS: 40 charged in NJ child porn sweep; arrests in every county

HAMILTON TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Authorities have announced 40 arrests in connection with an ongoing child pornography investigation across New Jersey.

Operation Statewide, conducted over a six-month period by the N.J. Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, resulted in the arrest of at least one person from each of the state's 21 counties.

The charges include possession of child pornography and distribution of images and videos depicting children engaged sexual activities.

At a news conference Thursday, N.J. Attorney General Christopher Porrino said all the suspects charged are men, ranging in age from 20 to 72 years old.

The arrests "were the result of a proactive scanning of internet traffic to discover who was sharing and downloading these files across New Jersey," Porrino said.

The suspects include several factory workers, an accountant, and a former teacher.

Those arrested included a New Jersey teacher.

37-year-old Adam Farrington taught in Delran, NJ, Bristol Township, Pa., and Philadelphia. Authorities say he left teaching in 2008.

He is a father of three young children. There was no answer at the door of his Cinnaminson home Thursday.

An attorney for Farrington released the following statement on Saturday:

"There is no evidence against him and he has never been accused of harming any children. Our position is that he was wrongfully arrested."

Authorities say 47-year-old John DeFay Jr. of Pittman, a computer professional, was found to have 76,000 videos and pornographic images of children on his computer, and duplicate copies of all those images on a backup device.

Porrino said the investigation is ongoing.
