ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- Hundreds gathered Saturday at a memorial service for a little girl brutally killed two months ago in New Mexico.

Victoria Martens was 10 years old when police say she was raped and murdered.

"Just as she was looking for other children to play with, in many ways, she may be looking for ways for her and many of us community leaders to try to protect more children," said New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas.

Several hundred people gathered to remember Victoria Martens.

Albuquerque Police Chief Eden spoke about the strength of the community following the tragedy, saying, "We came here together to grieve, but we came here together to support one another."

Governor Martinez expressed how this tragedy rocked the state.

"But when I look at her photo, I can't help but see a sweet child radiating kindness," she said through tears.

And, finally, Victoria's godmother told stories of her kindness.

"And so, she knocked on my door that morning and said, 'Excuse me. My name is Victoria.' I said, 'Well, aren't you a cute little thing? Where'd you come from?' She had little pig tails. She says, 'I'm new in the neighborhood, but do you have any kids I can play with?'" said Laura Bobbs.

The crowd was in constant sorrow, remembering Martens' short yet impactful life.

Three people, including the child's mother, are charged in connection with her death.
