Stories of Hope and Inspiration

2014 Breast Cancer Statistics

Because of improvement in cancer treatment and early detections, more women are celebrating another birthday this year. Whether you're worried about developing breast cancer, making decisions about treatment, trying to stay well after treatment, the American Cancer Society can help.

It is important to know your risk of developing breast cancer and take control of the lifestyle choices we know have an influence. For women of average risk, screening should start at the age of 40. Early detection provides the best chance of Beating the Odds!

Early detection can be lifesaving when it comes to breast cancer. Mammograms, clinical exams, and self-exams help detect lumps and allow you to become familiar with your breasts so you know what is and is not normal. Always check with your healthcare provider to determine what is best for you.

The American Cancer Society also offers an annual mammogram reminder that can be found here.

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society's efforts have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We're finding cures as the nation's largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring those facing cancer have the help they need and continuing to fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more. We're determined to finish the fight against cancer.
