PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Phillies have placed pitcher Cliff Lee on the 60-day disabled list with a left forearm strain.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, the team says this is the same injury that disabled Lee twice in 2014.

"Cliff has now attempted to twice rehabilitate this injury without having surgery. While surgery has now been recommended, it would effectively put an end to his 2015 season as the rehabilitation from the surgery would run through the end of the season," the statement read.

The Phillies and Lee have decided to try to rehabilitate the injury non-operatively once again.

They hope Lee might be able to return to pitch during the 2015 season.

He has been immediately shut down from throwing.

Cliff Lee will be sent home to rest and begin a rehab program to maintain his overall conditioing, but "will be brought to Philadelphia periodically to be evaluated to determine a time at which he might be able to begin a throwing program again."

Lee started only 13 games last season due to the elbow strain.

Lee, 36, went 4-5 with a 3.65 ERA last year after pitching at least 200 innings in eight of the previous nine seasons.
