Work crew ruptures gas main in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- A work crew in Wilmington, Delaware ruptured a 2-inch gas main Tuesday morning.

The incident happened at 3rd and Harrison Streets.

Firefighters arrived to the scene around 9:43 a.m. to assist the workers in shutting down the gas.

Authorities say a contractor for Delmarva was working in the area and struck the gas line.

Homes in the 200 and 300 blocks of South Harrison Street were evacuated as a precaution.

There were also evacuations from a Latin American Community Center.

A total of forty residents in the area had to be evacuated.

The gas was secured in about thirty minutes and employees from the center were able to return.

There were no reports of injuries.

Officials say the repairs should be complete shortly after noon.
