JACKSON, N.J. -- A New Jersey man who was high on heroin when he caused a crash that killed an off-duty police officer is now headed to state prison.

Ocean County prosecutors say 39-year-old Jason Wolek, of Jackson, received an eight-year term when he was sentenced Friday. He had pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide.

Authorities said Wolek was driving on a suspended license in June 2014 when he made a left turn in front of a motorcycle driven by Christopher Hoffman. The Brick Township resident had served on the Watchung police force for a month before his death.

Hoffman's mother said he was headed home from his National Guard service at Fort Dix when he was killed. He was planning to have dinner with his girlfriend that night to celebrate his upcoming 29th birthday.
