When life gives you kidney stones, drink lemonade.

Doctors say the summertime favorite is good all year for people prone to kidney stones.

"It has the stuff that stabilizes stones, but it has a lot less of the stuff that can form stones, so we tell people to drink lemonade," said Dr. Jeffrey Donohoe.

Specifically, lemon juice has citric acid, which prevents crystal deposits in the kidneys from turning to stones.

And it's also low in oxalate, a substance that contributes to stones.

The super-sweet store-bought lemonade has less citric acid and too much sugar, so go for the homemade version.

Doctors say they're seeing more kidney stones among kids, particularly teens.
