Abington-Jefferson Health and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, Independence Blue Cross, and the American Cancer Society are working together during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October to educate women and men about breast cancer. We want to help you learn how to Beat the Odds and finish the fight against breast cancer!

Every woman knows she needs to get regular mammograms when she reaches a certain age. This is still the main screening procedure for detecting breast cancer, and for women with breast cancer who need to determine the extent of the disease. Although there's been some debate regarding when a woman should start mammogram screenings, many professional medical societies, including the American Cancer Society, suggest starting at age 40 and continuing with annual mammograms. Currently, mammography is the best cancer screening tool out there; it has helped to reduce breast cancer mortality by almost one third since 1990.

However, we know "getting checked" is not always an easy conversation to start.

This year, share this message with someone you love, and let a picture do the talking. Print out the poster below, and join our movement to beat the odds against breast cancer. Share your photo on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #6abcBeatCancer; together, we can make strides towards beating this disease!

Early detection can be lifesaving when it comes to breast cancer. Mammograms, clinical exams, and self-exams help detect lumps and allow you to become familiar with your breasts so you know what is and is not normal. Always check with your healthcare provider to determine what is best for you.

Breast Cancer Facts

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society's efforts have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We're finding cures as the nation's largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring those facing cancer have the help they need and continuing to fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more. We're determined to finish the fight against cancer.
