Bear in tree delays start of Phillipsburg, New Jersey school (PHOTO)

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (WPVI) -- The opening of a school in Phillipsburg, New Jersey was delayed by 90 minutes on Friday because of a bear in a tree.

The bear was reported around 6 a.m. outside Phillipsburg High School.

Officials believe the bear had been there most of the night.

In the end, it took a few hours to get the bear down. A tranquilizer was used on the bear, and she fell into safety netting below.

Wildlife officials said no one was in danger.

The 18-month-old, 95 pound bear was likely just forced out into the wild by her mother and was simply looking for a new home.

Of course, the front lawn of a high school isn't a good spot.

"We're going to release her back to a more suitable location and, obviously, Phillipsburg is not it. Some place with a few more trees and fewer cars," said Kelcey Burguess, a biologist with New Jersey Fish and Wildlife.

Biologists will also put tags on the bear to keep track of her.

They also say this is breeding season, so bear sightings may start to become more common.
