Four families are homeless after a fire ripped through an apartment building in Bustleton.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Four families are homeless after a fire ripped through an apartment building in the Bustleton section of Philadelphia.

The first started at the Excelsior Condos on the 2000 block of Welsh Road around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Flames spread to a second floor apartment and burned through the roof.

Two other apartments suffered extensive smoke and water damage.

A couple in their 70s who lived in one of the apartments were assisted out by firefighters; both were taken by medic unit to Aria Health Torresdale suffering from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
