RIDLEY TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Delaware County authorities are trying to find out what led to a double shooting that ended with the death of a five-year-old boy, and his mother critically injured.

Police say the alleged trigger man was the boy's own father. He died late Sunday afternoon as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Five-year-old Cion Styles and his mom, 26-year-old Shyema Washington, spent Saturday at her sister's house celebrating a birthday.

After the party, Cion's dad, 26-year-old Tyrell Styles, picked him up. The couple, who danced happily at a family wedding in May, had recently split.

Styles brought Cion back around 11:00 p.m. and Washington went outside to get her little boy.

Lt. Scott Willoughby, from Ridley Twp. Police, explains, "When he brought the child back to the house, she had gone out to the back to retrieve the child, at which time the sister said she heard gunshots."

Washington's sister, Daneesha Hill, heard the shots and ran downstairs.

She says, "I just went to the door, and as I got to the door she was coming in... She's saying, 'He shot me! He shot me! Don't let me die.' I was like, I'm not going to let you die."

Police say Styles shot his son in the head and ankle, killing him. He shot Washington four times. She's in critical condition and doesn't know her little boy was killed.

After the shooting, Styles led police on a chase, hitting a car in Folcroft and ending in a cul-de-sac in Sharon Hill.

As police approached his Pontiac Grand Prix, Styles fired a bullet from his 9mm Ruger into his own head.

Washington's family said they had no inkling Styles would become violent. He was a security guard who was licensed to carry the registered gun he used in the shootings.
