Crime Fighters: Who killed Mustafa Small?

CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Shantia Bacon still can't believe her brother, 30-year-old Mustafa Small, is gone.

"He was about family," Bacon told Action News. "He was a nice guy. He'd give you the shirt off his back, you know? He took care of my mom when she had a kidney transplant... I just can't believe someone would take his life."

On Friday April 1st, just before 4 p.m., Small was walking on the sidewalk along the 2200 block of West Indiana Avenue in North Philadelphia.

"He was with a friend of his," said Bacon. "Someone told me he was with a friend. They were walking down the street."

Bacon says neighbors told her that's when Small and his friend were approached by another male. The three exchanged words then parted ways.

"They said the guy kept following him and kept calling him. And he kept walking and... like, you know... trying to shrug the guy off," said Bacon. "He said he turned around to see what the guy wanted and that's when the guy started shooting at them."

Small was hit in the chest and killed.

Bacon says one small consolation to her was that a neighbor was with him at the end.

"He died out there on Indiana Avenue," said Bacon. "She said she stayed out there until he took his last breath."

Bacon said the loss came a particularly difficult time for her family.

"We needed him," she said. "My father just had a stroke, and he was in rehabilitation. (My mother) just had a kidney transplant and he was helping her. And they just took him away for no reason."

The City of Philadelphia is offering up to $20,000 in reward money for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
