SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 48-year-old woman is dead and her 21-year-old daughter hospitalized after police say the daughter's ex-boyfriend stabbed them both in South Philadelphia.

Candles and a teddy bear now sit outside their front door on the 2700 block of Daly Terrace, after investigators scoured the scene for evidence.

Police were called shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday. They say the daughter's 25-year-old ex-boyfriend, apparently enraged by a recent break-up, attacked them.

"He was upset about the fact that he got dumped," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "That is what motivated this particular stabbing."

Police real-time crime cameras captured video of the suspect running away as the two injured women lay outside.

Neighbors ran to help and called 911.

"I saw the young men brave enough to help her," Malikah Mundey told Action News. "They were saying, 'Help! Help! She's dying!'"

Police say they know who the suspect is. They have his name and his address in North Philadelphia and are working to locate him.

Investigators say he has been arrested before, but haven't said why.

Neighbors say officers were just called to the home a few days ago after the two were arguing.

"They had an incident on Monday," said Ernest Harris. "Now we are here on Thursday, and we're sitting here talking about her. And her mother's dead, and she's fighting for her life."

"The mother was hard-working," said Mundey. "She'd do anything for her daughters."

Anyone with information about the suspect or the crime is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.
