BRIDGEVILLE, Del. (WPVI) -- A former Delaware state representative was struck and killed in Bridgeville Tuesday evening.

The fatal accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Federalsburg Road, east of Barnes Road.

Police say 84-year-old Ben Ewing Jr., the former Deputy Superintendent of Delaware State Police and a former State Representative, was in the westbound lane of traffic when he was struck by the front right bumper of Mazda.

Ewing was pronounced dead at the scene by Sussex County paramedics.

The driver of the Mazda stopped at the scene.

Police say the Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation, adding that alcohol and speed were not believed to be contributing factors in this case.

Governor Jack Markell released the following statement on Ewing's passing:

It's hard to think about Bridgeville without thinking about the impact Ben Ewing had on that community for decades. From his service in the Marine Corps, to his career with the State Police, to his time as an elected Representative, Ben's career was one of service to his country, state, and the people of the 35th District. Ben and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight and in the tough days to come.

Anyone with information on this incident should contact Master Corporal K. Argo at 302-703-3264.
