SOMERTON (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating a fatal auto pedestrian accident in the city's Somerton section.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Byberry Road near Proctor Road.

"A 73-year-old man was crossing the street heading southbound toward the Shalom Apartments where he lived," said Capt. Drew Techner. "He was struck by an automobile operated by a 20-year-old traveling eastbound on Byberry Road."

Police said the striking vehicle then hit another vehicle traveling westbound on Byberry Road.

The victim was taken to Aria-Torresdale Hospital where he died of head injuries a short time later, police said.

Both drivers remained at the scene, police said, and are being interviewed by AID.

"Here we are six days before Christmas and there's a family without a loved one. ... This is a very tragic accident," said Techner.
