WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A man has been charged after an ambush and killing in West Philadelphia.

23-year-old Richard McMillan has been charged with murder.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday at 52nd and Pine.

Police say the victim, 31-year-old Maurice Adside, was shot at point blank range as he was stepping out of his car.

"He was very much the intended target. Seven shots were fired and he was hit 4 times," said Capt. James Clark of Philadelphia Police.

Clark says officers captured the suspect immediately after the crime.

Police say a 31-year-old man was ambushed and fatally shot while getting out of his car in West Philadelphia.

"Seconds, right after the shooting. We got flash information that there was a male in a red hoodie fleeing on foot. Uniform officers saw a male run into a location around the corner, went inside, got him, and brought him into the Homicide Unit," said Clark.

Detectives interviewed witnesses throughout the early morning, trying to piece together why Adside was targeted.

There are city real-time cameras in the area along with surveillance cameras from local businesses.

"We're talking to some of the descendant's family and friends to find out what he was into and find out what this was about, but right now we don't know," Clark said.

It's not clear how, or if, McMillan and the victim knew each other.
