Police said an officer was injured while trying to assist a SPCA officer in Wilmington, Delaware.

WILMINGTON (WPVI) -- Police said an officer was injured while trying to assist a SPCA officer in Wilmington, Delaware.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of North Spruce Street.

Police said officers, involved in a Toy Run traveling to the Boys and Girls Club, observed an SPCA officer on top of a car yelling for help.

The two officers tried to assist, police said, when two dogs attacked them.

At least one officer fired his gun, striking both dogs, police said.

One dog died on location. Police are searching for the other wounded dog.

The injured officer was taken to the hospital for observation for an injury pertaining to the officer's hearing from the gunshots.

Police are investigating.
