Philadelphia woman killed by flying plywood in New York City

NEW YORK CITY (WPVI) -- Heavy winds blew a sheet of plywood off a construction building that struck and killed a local woman in New York City

36-year-old Tina Nguyen who grew up in Philadelphia was walking and talking on her cell phone when she was struck by a 4-by-8 sheet of plywood.

The impact of the debris which blew across the street caused the woman to hit her head on the wall of a parking garage.

She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Nguyen's fiance, Alex says he will bury her in Philadelphia where they met five years ago.

"She always saw the best in everyone. She was always reminding me to see the same. We were together for 5 of the best years of our lives. This is the most devastating loss," said Alex.

Action News spoke with Nguyen's brother by telephone Thursday.

He said, "The family is devastated by what has happened. We miss her terribly."

One resident wanted to know why the Greenwich Village construction site wasn't secured. "It's very windy here one would think that they would take extra precautions because it's a windy block."

Turner Construction is in charge of the site. They expressed condolences to the victim and said the company is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
