Philadelphia police officer charged with attempted murder in son's shooting

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia officer who police say shot his 19-year-old son during an off-duty altercation inside his Northeast Philadelphia home has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and related offenses.[br /][br /]Charges against Officer Dorian Young were announced Tuesday morning by Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams.[br /][Ads /][br /][media ID="1499516[br /]" /][br /]The incident happened at 6:30 p.m. on Monday Sept. 5th at the officer's home in the 2700 block of Taunton Street in Northeast Philadelphia.[br /][Ads /][br /]Police say four people were inside the home, including Young, who was off-duty at the time.[br /][br /]Williams said the officer got into an argument with his son, Devine Young, over the use of the family car, which escalated into a physical altercation.[br /][br /][photo ID="1619968" /][br /][br /]After the physical altercation, Williams said, the officer drew his personal weapon, a .40 caliber pistol, and fired twice.[br /]The first bullet struck Dorian Young in the foot. The second bullet struck Devine Young in the back.[br /][br /]After medics arrived, Devine Young was rushed to Aria Hospital. He eventually lost his spleen due to the injuries inflicted by the bullet, Williams said.[br /][Ads /][br /]Young, a 24-year veteran assigned to the 15th District, was placed on restricted duty after the incident.[br /][br /]Williams said Young turned himself into police at 10 a.m. Tuesday before the charges against him were announced.[br /][br /]Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross told Action News Young has been suspended with the intent to dismiss within 30 days.[br /][br /]Ross said the outcome of the D.A.'s investigation came as no shock.[br /][br /]"I'm not terribly surprised by it," said Ross. "I think the ballistic evidence kind of suggested it wasn't the type of struggle that we originally thought, and so clearly the D.A. believed that it warranted an arrest.
