CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- A total of 15 people were charged after an investigation targeting an alleged drug ring supplying heroin and cocaine in Camden and North Philadelphia.
The New Jersey Attorney General's office identified the ring leader as 33-year-old Fernando Diaz-Rivera, aka "Gordo," who has homes in Salem City, N.J. and Salinas, Puerto Rico.
The ring Diaz-Rivera allegedly ran imported 20 to 30 kilos of heroin and cocaine every month. In recent months, investigators say he ran the ring from Puerto Rico, giving orders to other top ring members.
Among them was a man identified as Diaz-Rivera's top lieutenant, 33-year-old Luis Ortez-Merced, aka "Moodo," of Philadelphia.
Also during the investigation, dubbed "Operation Inferno," authorities say they seized cocaine and heroin with a street value of up to $2 million.
"Heroin is taking a devastating toll on individuals, families and communities across New Jersey and the United States. By taking down these top heroin suppliers in Camden and North Philadelphia, which are major distribution hubs, we're stopping thousands of doses of heroin from reaching users across the region each week," Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino said in a statement.
