SMYRNA, Del. (WPVI) -- Police say an officer shot and killed an armed suspect involved in a domestic dispute in Smyrna, Delaware.

Officers responded around 11:23 Friday night after a call about a dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend at the Sunnyside Village Development.

They arrived and contacted the female in the residence. She told police her boyfriend fled before they arrived.

Around 12:18 a.m., police received a second call that the boyfriend had returned and was attempting to force his way into the apartment.

The apartment was occupied by the girlfriend and an adult male, police say.

Officers arrived and encountered the suspect in front of the building allegedly armed with a shotgun.

Officials say police gave verbal commands at the suspect who refused to comply and that's when the officer fired on him.

The officers began medically treating the suspect. He was then taken to Bayhealth Smyrna emergency room by ambulance.

He later died at the hospital. His name has not been released.

The 11-year veteran police officer has been placed on administrative leave until the outcome of the investigation.
