Sewer main project repairs causing headaches in Chester Co.

TREDYFFRIN, Pa. (WPVI) -- A broken pipe has been causing headaches for months for drivers in one part of Chester County.

And it turns out fixing the problem is going to take longer than expected.

The complex project began this spring.

Heavy plastic is being used to reline an old, deteriorating concrete sewer main.

To do that two area roads that carry about 3,400 vehicles a day had to close.

The 30-inch line serves some 70,000 customers in multiple townships, including Tredyffrin and East Whiteland.

It runs for three-and-a-half miles underground through Valley Forge Park and crosses the Schuylkill River twice before getting to the treatment plant.

But chunks of heavy concrete in those river crossings have caused unexpected delays.

Township engineers showed us a photo of some of the debris that took weeks to be removed.

"We also found the interior lining of those pipes had worn away," said Steve Burgo of Tredyffrin Township.

Bottom line, the extra work means the roads, Route 252 and Yellow Springs Road with its historic covered bridge, will not be reopening by Labor Day.

"Right now we are looking for an early October date to reopen 252," said Burgo.

Yellow Springs Road is not likely to open till mid-November.

Some drivers Thursday told us they were not happy about the delays, but others weren't as bothered by the news.

"Don't really care. I mean it's been closed for a while now so it is what it is," said Kailyn Womack.
