Shooting in Frankford prompts lockdown at nearby elementary school

FRANKFORD (WPVI) -- A shooting in Philadelphia's Frankford section prompted a lockdown at a nearby elementary school.

The gunfire erupted before 1 p.m. Thursday in the 5300 block of Charles Street.

15th District officers arrived to find a 20-year-old man lying in the street with gunshot wounds to the head and stomach.

Police took him to Aria Health/Torresdale, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Investigators began searching the area for a man in a black SUV seen fleeing the location of the shooting.

As a precaution, officials instituted lockdown procedures at Smedley Elementary, a Mastery Charter school located at Bridge and Charles Streets.

Action News is told no weapon was recovered at the crime scene.

There have been no arrests.
