Singing, dancing, all smiles at St. Christopher's Hospital prom

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- There was singing, dancing and a lot of smiling Friday night at the St. Christopher's Hospital for Children prom.

More than 50 cancer patients shed their hospital threads for formal wear.

A night to forget tests and treatments, and have fun!

"It's a celebration to get everybody motivated to keep going," said Kyle Davys of Frankford.

Davys, 17, says he and his family are staying positive as he battles Hodgkin's lymphoma.

"In the beginning it was tough. I can't front," said Davys.

The night was especially sweet for the O'Malley family of Northeast Philadelphia who are celebrating 4-year-old Madeline's remission from Leukemia.

"Stuff like this happens monthly," said Shaun O'Malley. "It gets to the point Maddy doesn't want to leave this place."

For 8-year-old Yalex Perez, doing the "Whip/Nae Nae" is his favorite way to forget the pain.

"I dance whenever I get sick," said Yalex.

Organizers call the event a family prom. It's a chance to celebrate the kids who are battling the disease, but also those who love and support them, who are also affected.

"Families are separated because one child's in the hospital and one parent is with them, and the other child is at home," said Robin Capecci, St. Christopher's social worker. "This is a way for them all to be together."

"I've been here since January," Adlialys Conception tells us.

Adlialys is battling two rare diseases while her family juggles work and two babies at home.

It's not easy, but her mom says nights like this help them continue the fight.

"Surviving day by day," said Rachel Santiago of Hunting Park. "We celebrate everyday as if tomorrow's not promised."
