WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Part of West Philadelphia High School was evacuated on Wednesday morning after a cell phone started smoking.

It happened in a classroom on the third floor of the building.

Officials tell Action News a student reported a cell phone had fallen from a storage area under a desk.

When the phone hit the ground, the student said it made a sizzling noise. The worried student kicked the phone away, and that's when it started smoking.

The third floor was then evacuated.

School district spokesman Lee Whack said "The safety of our students is paramount, and so we take all necessary precautions for that."

There was no word on what type of phone it was.

No injuries were reported.
