A 16-year-old student was slapped with a 200 dollar fine for taking a second lunch at his high school in Wisconsin.

HAYWARD, Wis. (WPVI) -- A 16-year-old student was slapped with a $200 dollar fine for taking a second lunch at his high school in Wisconsin.

Court documents say the head cook pursued charges against the student for theft, but the district superintendent says that is not what happened.

He said the case was reported to school administrators, and they decided what to do next.

"There's some cases referrals to police happen and then police make decisions off statutes and what not," said Craig Olson, Hayward Superintendent.

School officials would not give any more details, but they insist they make sure no students go hungry.

Others have started an online fundraiser to help the teen pay his fine while the case remains under investigation.
