NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A teenager was shot and killed on a crowded North Philadelphia basketball court, police say.

The shooting happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 800 block of West Cumberland Street.

Police say someone opened fire on a 17-year-old boy.

When police arrived, there was a temporary problem with crowd control, which necessitated backup.

Medics responded and were unable to revive the teen.

The teenager, who suffered gunshot wounds to the head and torso, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are scouring the area for a male shooter.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small says there were at least a hundred people on the court at the time of the shooting.

He says though the suspect fired at least ten shots, there were no other injuries.
