PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Virgin America has announced plans to suspend their airline service in Philadelphia starting in October.

The announcement came Friday.

Airline officials say that a recent opportunity to bring service to other cities such as Dallas, Washington D.C. and New York, prompted the decision.

The suspension of service will officially go into effect on October 6, 2014.

The airline says guests who have already booked travel to or from Philadelphia beyond October 6th will receive a full refund for their flight or will be re-accommodated on other airlines.

Philadelphia based employees will be offered transfers to other locations.

Officials also say they hope to have the opportunity to bring service back to Philadelphia sometime in the future.
