STRAWBERRY MANSION (WPVI) -- A brand new safe haven for kids is really coming to life in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia.

Dozens of volunteers put the finishing touches on renovations for the Police Athletic League's 19th Center.

They've completely transformed the gymnasium at the old LP Hill Middle School.

Saturday's projects included a fresh coat of paint, new ceilings, and getting the basketball hoops back into place.

The Chairman of PAL's Board of Directors is also 6abc's President and General Manager Bernie Prazenica, who was on hand to thank everyone involved.

"Your willingness to jump into this and do all this work, and you transform a place like this, and what it's going to mean to these kids. And one of these days you've got to come back and see it when its full of kids and say wow, we did that and you're so proud of it."

This project is three years in the making.

Next up is the installation of a new hardwood basketball court - funded by the Sixers Foundation.
