EGG HARBOR TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- An off-duty New Jersey state trooper risked his life to save a couple trapped inside a crashed and burning SUV.

It happened Tuesday morning on the Atlantic City Expressway near Egg Harbor Township.

Sergeant James Mitchell said he was driving to work when he spotted a Nissan Pathfinder strike a concrete barrier in the center median and burst into flames.

Trooper Mitchell first helped the driver get out of the vehicle.

He then grabbed a woman sitting in the front seat and pulled her through the window.

"I'm glad I was there. I'm sure anybody else would've stopped, too, but I happened to be there at the right time and I was able to pull her out," Mitchell said.

The driver was not hurt. The woman is recovering in the hospital.
