It occurred around 11:55 p.m. Saturday on the 3300 block of Fairhill Street.
Police say the 57-year-old victim had just parked his car and walked up to his home when he was approached by the suspect.
The male suspect, according to police, tried to grab the victim's chain he was wearing around his neck.
Police report both men struggled and the suspect pulled out a handgun firing at least one time.
The victim was struck once in the upper thigh.
The suspect fled on foot.
Police transported the victim to Temple University Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
