Upper Moreland students begin school year in brand new building: Jeannette Reyes reports during Action News at 12:30 p.m. on August 28, 2017.

UPPER MORELAND, Pa. (WPVI) -- The alarm clock started buzzing a little earlier this morning for plenty of youngsters across our region today.

It's the first day of school for Upper Moreland Middle School students, but it's not just 6th graders walking into a brand new building.

"I'm really nervous to be honest," said 6th grader, Mikey Muncer.

Students had a whole range of emotions, mostly jitters and excitement for incoming 6th graders who are trying to get use to a new routine and responsibilities.

"It's very nerve wracking coming to a whole different school but we are getting around," said 6th grader, Grace Hanson.

It's business as usual for 8th grader Matt Ludlow who's in his last year of middle school. And he's got some sound advice for the newcomers.

"It's pretty exciting. You get to see old friends and make new friends and it a whole new experience," he said. "There's nothing to worry about as long as you be yourself and listen to the teachers and if you need help, ask, because there always will be help."

Mrs. Leslie Valentine has been teaching for over two decades. She loves it but boy do those summers seem to fly by.

"It starts like it's slow and then August hits and it flies every time," she said.

And though 6th graders are new to the middle school, it's everyone's first look at the massive renovation. The completed project includes a brand new library and auditorium.

"This year we had a lot of construction. We finished up our second year of a construction project, so our halls were filled with jackhammers and construction workers. But as you can see it was well worth it and they did a great job," said Principal Joe Waters.

It's the first A+ on the books this year.

Theres an open house Tuesday night. Community members are invited to attend to take a tour of the new school.
