April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. Would you be able to recognize signs of animal abuse, neglect, or cruelty? Some of the most common indicators are:

- POOR BODY CONDITION: This can include fur that is extremely matted or filthy, have open sores, or covered in ticks, fleas, or maggots.

- LACK OF FOOD OR WATER: The animal may be breathing heavily, lethargic, or appear to be very malnourished.

- LACK OF SHELTER: This is especially important in extreme heat or cold. The dog may be panting heavily in the sun or shivering in winter conditions.

- ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR: If the animal is acting aggressively, seemingly out of nowhere, or cowering in fear, these may be signs of abuse.

- EVIDENCE OF FIGHTING: Some of the most common signs are: bite marks, scars, infections, and missing body parts (especially ears and tails).

If you believe you see an animal that is in immediate danger, call 911 to report it to local police. You can also contact your local animal control agency.
