PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 43-year-old man is behind bars after police say he admitted beating a woman to death with a hammer in Kensington.

It happened before 2:30 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 3000 block of Ruth Street.

Officers arrived to find 41-year-old Marisol Garcia-Infante lying unconscious next to her bed in a pool of blood.

Medics pronounced her dead.

A short time later, 43-year-old Juan Valerio approached police stationed outside the home.

Police say Valerio told them he hit Garcia-Infante in the head with a hammer.

Detectives took him into custody and later charged him with murder and possession of an instrument of crime.

There was no immediate word what motivated the attack.
