If state lawmakers can't reach a budget deal, the superintendent of the Philadelphia School District says schools may be forced to shut down.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- If state lawmakers can't reach a budget deal, the superintendent of the Philadelphia School District says schools may be forced to shut down.

William Hite sent a memo to staffers Tuesday night, saying the school system could run out of money by Jan. 29.

Hite said after that date, the district may not be able to pay employees - or pay the bills.

The letter promises the district is exploring all options.

The state has been without a budget since June 30.
