Police investigate 3-way crash on Roosevelt Boulevard

NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The driver said sun glare was the cause of a chain-reaction crash on Roosevelt Boulevard Wednesday evening.

But police are investigating if the driver of the taxi cab that caused the crash was under the influence.

The crash occurred at Front Street and Roosevelt Boulevard at the height of rush hour. It was there the driver of the cab allegedly went through a stop light.

"He was riding on Front Street and the cab ran the red light and the car flipped over," said Trynise Bishop. Bishop's father was driving the van that was struck by the cab.

At the time of the crash, 52-year-old Tyrone Bishop was headed toward Rising Sun Avenue after stopping at the store. He was still conscious when he called his wife; later, he was taken to the hospital.

"She's screaming 'we got to go because your dad just got into an accident," said Bishop. "When we pulled up he was laying on the ground."

The crash not only caused the van to flip but forced it to hit a white Honda with an off-duty police officer inside. The officer, assigned to the bike unit, had his bike on the back of the car.

The bike was totaled but the officer was not hurt in the crash.

The cab driver was taken to the hospital. Charges have not been filed against her at this time.

There were at least two passengers in the cab. Police have not said if they were injured.

Tyrone Bishop's family said they are still waiting to see the extent of his injuries.
