PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said Sunday he's the candidate with the best chance to defeat Republican Donald Trump in the general election this fall.

"Donald Trump must not become president, and I am happy to tell you that Donald Trump will not become president of the United States," Sanders told more than 6,750 supporters at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Hundreds of people were waiting in line early Sunday afternoon, a few hours before the Vermont senator was due to speak at the state's flagship university.

In addition to his remarks on Trump, Sanders addressed several issues at the rally, including his plans to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, combat climate change and ensure universal health care.

The rally is the first of two that Sanders has planned in New Jersey. The other is scheduled for Monday morning in Atlantic City.

Sanders currently trails front-runner Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary.

New Jersey voters head to the polls on June 7.
