Christmas tree safety

SPRING GARDEN (WPVI) -- Now is the prime time to pick out a christmas tree.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer had some young helpers to demonstrate the proper way to choose one, and maintain it.

That includes making a one inch fresh cut at the base of the tree.

Secure it in a stand with plenty of room for water, and keep it away from portable heaters.

You can also look for a tree that comes with a tag that provides a list of safety tips.

The University of Pennsylvania donated 30 thousand of those tags to lots across the city.
