Free haircuts for Lawrence Township police

LAWRENCE TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Lawrence Township is trying to show its police just how much they're appreciated.

Patrolman John Stever was one of many who sat in the chair at the Great Looks salon in the Mercer Mall Tuesday.

He was getting a complimentary haircut as part of the salon's Police Officer Appreciation Day, a way to say thanks for all they do.

"I think it's just a matter of bringing the community together as a whole in the midst of all the negativity around all these different episodes that have happened in the last few weeks," salon owner Denise Taylor said.

"We are not only behind the community, we are also behind the first responders and the police force and this is our way of demonstrating that," salon owner Chase Taylor said.

Attendees prayed with local pastors and several officers, who were touched by the effort to support those in uniform.

"I think it's outstanding. We really appreciate it. It's nice to see the community do something to give back and show they support us, especially now with everything going on," Stever said.

"The handshakes and the nods and the smiles and the waves, knowing that they are there to support us as we help them means a lot," Lawrence Township FOP President Ptl. Tom Everist said.

In addition to all the hugs, the handshakes and the prayers, at each beauty station there were messages to the police officers, all handwritten and heartfelt.

"We love what they are doing, we believe in the police, we believe in their heart, we love their service and their sacrifice," Pastor Josh Conn of the 217 Church said.

"We need them out here, we need them. There's a lot of stuff going on right now and we need them so we want to show our appreciation and give back and help them out with some fresh haircuts," volunteer barber James Taylor said.

There was a special cake for the officers, but the icing on it, if you will, was the feeling of unwavering support offered here.

"To make a statement to say everybody's important, including our police. So we love you," April Sette of Bordentown, NJ said.
