The National Park Service wants to double the entrance fees at 17 of the most popular parks.
Under the agency's proposal, the entrance fee would jump from $30 to $70 during peak season.
The cost of an annual pass, which permits entrance into all federal lands and parks, would stay at $80.
The National Park Service said the increase would help pay for badly needed improvements, including to roads, bridges and campgrounds.
