The memory of a fallen Delaware State Trooper will live on through a new scholarship established in his name.

Corporal Stephen Ballard, an eight year veteran, was fatally shot while investigating a suspicious vehicle outside a New Castle County Wawa back in April.

An anonymous couple has established a fund in his honor.

The $100,000 gift is for students majoring in criminal justice at Delaware State University, the same program Ballard graduated from in 2007.

His wife, Louise says her late husband would be overjoyed.

"He would be so grateful because he knew what it was like to go to school full-time, and work while he was in school in order to make sure that he could pay for his education, and take care of himself, so this is amazing," she said.

The Ballard fund will provide an annual $5,000 scholarship beginning next year.
