Dugouts clear after Yasiel Puig HBP

LOS ANGELES -- Benches emptied in the first inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night after Madison Bumgarner hit Yasiel Puig with a pitch on the left ankle.

Puig lay in the dirt for a few seconds before he got up and charged toward Bumgarner, gesturing with both hands before catcher Buster Posey and umpire Adrian Johnson intervened.

Bumgarner threw his glove behind him and threw down his arms in a challenging manner once Puig was held back.

"He looked at me and said, 'What are you looking at?'" Puig said through an interpreter. "I just reacted to what he said."

The bullpens also emptied onto the field, but there were no skirmishes. Umpires served warnings to both benches.

Bumgarner said that in trying to throw a cutter, he pulled the ball across and it hit Puig.

"Well, I probably said something first," Bumgarner said. "He's sitting there staring at me."

Bad blood between Puig and Bumgarner dates to May 9, when Puig hit a long home run to center field and took his time circling the bases. When he reached home, Bumgarner was standing waiting for him and yelled something in his direction.

On Tuesday, Justin Turner homered off Bumgarner leading off the inning before Bumgarner threw an 88 mph cutter off Puig's ankle.

Two batters later, Matt Kemp hit a long home run to center. Puig and Bumgarner didn't appear to exchange words when Puig reached the plate.

"Tempers flare sometimes," Kemp said. "It's a big game."

Turner belted a solo homer off Bumgarner in the eighth to end the left-hander's night.

Bumgarner made it 3-2 with a two-run homer in the third off Zack Greinke.

The Giants now trail the Dodgers by 4 games in the National League West. But San Francisco stands five games ahead of theMilwaukee Brewersfor the second wild-card spot.

Back in May, Bumgarner told reporters he was just "congratulating" Puig on his home run when they talked on the field.

"We had a little back and forth," Puig said Tuesday night. "I'm not sure if this was a continuation of that. I just reacted to what he said."

Bumgarner doesn't see a friendly future for him and Puig.

"I don't think that's in the cards for us," he said.
