WOOLWICH TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Police say a motorist was killed after a BMW sedan crashed into the back of a tractor trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike, touching off a large fire.

The accident happened at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in the northbound lanes near exit 2 for Route 322 in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County.

Images from Chopper 6 HD over the scene showed firefighters on the scene and smoke rising from the charred rear section of the tractor trailer.

The BMW that struck the big rig appeared to have been completely engulfed in flames.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. That person's name was being withheld pending notification of family members.

The cab of the tractor trailer appeared to have been detached from the truck and moved to another location before Chopper 6 arrived over the scene.

New Jersey State Police said the truck driver escaped without injury.

There was no immediate word what caused the crash.

The accident blocked both right lanes of the northbound turnpike for several hours, until crews were able clear the scene.
