DUI arrest after pedestrian struck and killed in Tioga-Nicetown

TIOGA-NICETOWN (WPVI) -- A man is in custody on suspicion of DUI after a person was struck and killed in Philadelphia's Tioga-Nicetown neighborhood.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. Thursday on the 4300 block of Wissahickon Avenue.

Officers were traveling southbound on Wissahickon when they noticed a BMW in the center median with a shattered windshield, heavy front end and hood damage, and smoke coming from the engine.

As the officers stopped to investigate the vehicle, police say a 53-year-old man walked up from behind them and stated that he struck an animal.

The officers saw blood on the hood of the vehicle and began to survey the area to determine what the man had struck.

As the officers walked northbound towards Roberts Avenue, they found a 23-year-old man on the sidewalk lying on his back pressed against the wall and bleeding from his head.

Medics responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead shortly after 2 a.m.

The driver of the BMW was then placed into custody for suspicion of DUI; he was transported to Temple University Hospital for treatment for a cut to his hand and facial injuries due to airbag deployment.
