PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Thousands of drivers can breathe a little easier as the Falls Bridge has officially reopened after two months of emergency repairs.

Streets Commissioner Donald D. Carlton announced Thursday the completion of the construction activity on the bridge. The bridge was then opened to traffic at 3 p.m.

The project included strengthening existing steel floor beams and stringers beneath the road surface.

City inspectors found rust and corrosion late last year, prompting emergency repairs.

City officials hope this round of repairs will last until a full restoration can be done in five or six years.
