Schuylkill Expressway construction at 676 Interchange begins: Dann Cuellar reports on Action News at 11 p.m., November 6, 2017

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Eastbound traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway at the 676 Interchange was reduced to one lane at 9 p.m. Monday night, and closed completely at 11 p.m. It will reopen at 5 a.m. and will close each overnight until Thursday.

"This is a multi-state project, meaning that we're doing it in sections in order to keep traffic moving as best as possible through the area of 30th Street and Chestnut and Walnut," said Gene Blaum of PennDOT. "Obviously it's a critical part of the city."

During the closure, eastbound traffic will be directed to exit at the 30th Street off-ramp, go around 30th Street Station, follow 30th Street onto Chestnut and then make a right turn to reach the on ramp for I-76 east.

"There will be intermittent restrictions on I-76 over the coming year because of the overhead work being done on Schuylkill Avenue," said Blaum.

This is all part of the $103-million Chestnut Street Bridge Replacement Project, which also includes repairing and rebuilding the Schuylkill Avenue Bridges which span over I-76 between Walnut and Market Streets.

It will take 15 months before the project is expected to be completed.
