Mites crawl out of Christmas tree
Mites crawl out of Christmas tree. Sharrie Williams reports during Action News at 6:30 a.m. on December 6, 2017.

Days after setting up their live Christmas tree, a Maryland family found mites crawling out of it.

They captured video of the bugs.

Tree sellers say the infestations are rare, but can happen.

So how can you avoid unwanted tree guests?

Pest control experts recommend vigorously shaking the tree in the parking lot, leaving it sit in your garage a few days, visually inspecting the tree for any pests before you buy, using a leaf blower or pre-treating the tree before it's brought into your home.

You can also lay down double-sided tape around the tree to see if you have a pest problem.
