Cleanup underway after storm causes damage across region
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Cleanup work is underway after a line of powerful storms tore through the region Sunday.
In Delaware County, a tree ripped up the sidewalk, crushed a car and crashed into a house along Wright Avenue in Darby.
"I just seen the tree fall down in front of my window and I just heard a 'boom,' but I'm just happy everybody's safe," said Donna Singleton of Darby.
Not far away, another falling tree pulled down power lines and left dozens of homes on North 4th Street in the dark.
"It was like wind, wind, wind, and then the lightning boom and then boom, and then look out and the tree was on the ground," said Tasha Bailey Bicks of Darby.
"We can't cook, we can't watch TV, can't charge our phones," said Constance Brown Rochester of Darby.
A couple had to be rescued in New Castle, Delaware, when strong winds caused their sailboat to capsize on the Delaware River, just off Battery Park.
Rescue crews brought them to the shore and they waited to land with the help of firefighters.
"We didn't really see the black clouds over here until we came back over the bridge again so we were trying to get back, and that one gust was just a little much," said one of the boat's occupants, who didn't want to give her name.
In Wallingford Township, Pennsylvania, people in a car suffered minor injuries on the 700 block of Brookhaven Road. They saw a tree falling and sped up to avoid it, but the tree still hit the vehicle.
In Horsham, Pennsylvania, a downed tree took out power lines when it crashed and blocked both directions of lower State Road while crews worked to clean it up.
Torrential rain flooded streets in Camden, New Jersey, sent people running for cover in Center City Philadelphia, where the rain was cascading off of buildings, and it soaked the crowds headed to music superstar Beyonce's big concert at the Linc.
"It was a real monsoon when we were in the parking lot, but it's lightening up a little bit," said Alex Jordan of Doylestown. "We're hoping for some pretty good weather."
"I don't care as long as I get to see Beyonce tonight," said Melanie Monroe of Westampton, New Jersey. "Even with all the rain, she is worth it."
